Shanghai weather is moderate, with a humid subtropical climate. The annual average temperature is around 15 C. The typical Shanghai weather that characterizes each season is warm spring, hot summer, cool autumn and cold winter. The four seasons in Shanghai are not as distinct as in northern China. In general, Shanghai weather is mild and humid throughout the year, and the spring and autumn are considered to be the best time to visit the city.
The precipitation in Shanghai is plentiful, as the average annual rainfall exceeds 1000 cm. The Plum Flower Rain season (frequent light rain), which occurs from mid-June to early July, brings an average rainfall of 259 mm per day. During this time, Shanghai weather is rainy and gloomy.
The summer is mostly hot and humid. The hottest months are July and August, when the temperature averages at 28 C. From July to September heavy showers and storms occur quite often, and particularly from late August till early September, Shanghai is usually attacked by typhoons and rainstorms. However, these rarely cause any damages.
Shanghai weather during winter is usually very humid and chilly, with cold winds blowing from the north. January is normally the coldest month, with a temperature average of 3 C. Even though the temperature will often drop well below 0, it hardly ever snows in Shanghai.
Spring, which typically occurs between March and May, is considered the nicest season of the year, as it is pleasantly warm and sunny. Autumn is also a nice period to visit the city, as the weather is generally mild, sunny and dry.
